Emmanuel Macron announces France supports Lebanon ceasefire

The French president said Thursday that France supported the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel announced in Washington and stood ready to help monitor it.

Emmanuel Macron made the statement during a press conference in Montenegro. “We support the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel and everything that helps restore peace,” he said. France is part of a coordination mechanism with the United States to verify implementation of the deal. The agreement calls for a ceasefire conditioned on a complete halt to Hezbollah fire and the creation of pilot zones controlled solely by the Lebanese army. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun described the text as “the last chance to reach a global and definitive ceasefire.” Hezbollah rejected the deal and demanded a global ceasefire plus full Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon. Incidents were reported after the announcement, including the death of one Israeli soldier and eight Lebanese civilians.
