Google, Apple and NBCUniversal launch Eclipsa Video HDR format

Google, Apple and NBCUniversal have introduced Eclipsa Video, an open HDR standard designed to deliver consistent picture quality across devices and viewing conditions.

The format addresses common HDR issues such as crushed shadows, clipped highlights and inconsistent brightness. It uses dynamic metadata including a white reference anchor and headroom-adaptive gain curves to adapt content to each screen's capabilities and ambient lighting.

Eclipsa Video is Google's branded version of the SMPTE ST 2094-50 standard. It operates similarly to Dolby Vision by employing dynamic metadata, while remaining an open standard unlike the proprietary Dolby Vision. HDR10 relies on static metadata, though its HDR10+ variant adds dynamic elements.

Platform-wide support for playback and capture is scheduled for Android 17, with availability planned across phones, tablets and TVs. Adoption will depend on device makers, streaming services and content providers.
