Instituto Nacional suspends classes over shooting threat linked to expelled students

The Instituto Nacional canceled classes on Friday, June 12, after receiving shooting threats attributed to recently expelled students.

The school’s administration announced the suspension of both morning and afternoon classes on Friday in a statement sent Thursday night. The notice cited serious threats received by video that included messages such as “Tiroteo mañana” and “Va a correr sangre mañana”.

The threats are believed to come from former students seeking revenge for their recent expulsion. The Servicio Local de Educación Pública Santiago Centro, which has overseen the school since January, began procedures to file a formal complaint.

Paulina Retamales, the SLEP executive director, said security protocols were activated and coordination is underway with Carabineros, prosecutors and the Education Ministry. Classes are expected to resume Monday under special police protection.
