Kenya Meteorological Service issues El Niño alert for 2026

The Kenya Meteorological Service Authority has issued an alert about a likely moderate to strong El Niño event developing in 2026.

In a statement released on June 9 the authority said global climate models show an 80 to 82 per cent chance of El Niño forming between June and August. The probability rises to 90 to 96 per cent that the conditions will continue through December.

The outlook indicates that the June to August period will bring near average or below average rainfall in many regions including the Highlands West of the Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria Basin. Southeastern and northeastern areas are expected to stay mostly dry with warmer temperatures.

Conditions are projected to change in the October to December season when El Niño typically increases rainfall and raises flood risks. The authority is also monitoring the Indian Ocean Dipole which could turn positive and strengthen the rainfall effects.

The Kenya Meteorological Service Authority urged the public county governments and disaster agencies to remain alert and follow official updates.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) updated its forecasts, estimating a 90% probability of El Niño starting in September 2026 and lasting through the year's final quarter. It raised the May-July projection from 25% in March to 61%. Experts warn of impacts in regions like the Caribbean, Andes, and Orinoquía, including forest fire risks from water deficits and thermal stress.

The World Meteorological Organization has announced a 90 percent chance of El Niño emerging in the second half of this year and affecting Kenya.

Kenya's weather department has announced that ongoing heavy rains are expected to reduce significantly by mid-May 2026. This signals the end of the March-April-May rainy season. However, regions like Mount Kenya and Lake Victoria Basin will see rains continue into June.

Kenya's meteorological authority forecasts ongoing rains throughout April, with flood risks in many areas. Rift Valley, Lake Victoria regions and nearby will see frequent heavy rains, accompanied by lightning.
