A Kenya Railways freight train heading to Mombasa caught fire in the Masimba area of Makueni County on Wednesday.

The train was transporting cargo from Nairobi to Mombasa when flames emerged at the engine carriage and spread to three or four cargo carriages.

Reports indicate there are no casualties at this time, although the full extent of any impact remains unconfirmed. Emergency teams were sent to the scene to contain the blaze.

The cause of the fire has not been established and Kenya Railways had not issued a statement as of the time of publishing. The train was using the old metre gauge railway.
