Laura Itzel Castillo to lead Women’s Secretariat

President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Monday that Laura Itzel Castillo will head the Secretariat of Women once she finishes her Senate duties.

The Morena senator, who presided over the upper chamber after Gerardo Fernández Noroña, will take the post at the department created by Sheinbaum. The Secretariat of Women has lacked an official head for two months since Citlalli Hernández rejoined Morena.

Sheinbaum stated at her June 15 morning conference that Castillo is arranging the dates to join. The next ordinary session period of Congress begins September 1, and the chamber is currently in Permanent Commission.

Castillo, born in Mexico City on November 16, 1957, is an architect who graduated from UNAM and daughter of politician Heberto Castillo. She has held positions with the PRD and Morena, as well as roles in the capital government and at Pemex.
