The visit, delayed from September due to political tensions in Paris, marks the 200th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Mexico and France, initiated in 1826 and ratified in 1830.
At Palacio Nacional, Sheinbaum and Macron held a private meeting followed by a joint press conference. They announced a temporary, reciprocal, and simultaneous transfer of the Azcatitlán and Boturini Codices for a 2026 cultural exhibition. Sheinbaum stated: “With this, it is reaffirmed to the world that there is no future of shared prosperity without the recognition of history; each codex, each stroke, each sign reminds us that we are heirs to civilizations that flourished long before Western modernity.” Macron proposed a working group between culture ministries.
The meeting included business delegations. Francisco Cervantes, CCE president, noted Macron's interest in Plan México as an integral development strategy, with opportunities in energy, infrastructure, and food. Altagracia Gómez Sierra, from Caderr, highlighted investments in clinical research, renewable energy, and industrial technologization, reaffirming commitments in aerospace and projects like Alstom's in railways. Sergio Contreras, from Comce, emphasized investments in infrastructure, energy, innovation, and artificial intelligence, along with Sheinbaum's focus on the rule of law.
Mexican attendees included Carlos Slim, Daniel Servitje, and Álvaro Fernández; the French delegation featured Frédéric Sanchez, Ross McInnes, and Henri Poupart-Lafarge. Later, at the Club de Industriales, Slim was honored, saying: “It is an honor given by the French Legion.”
Macron indirectly criticized the U.S. campaign against narco speedboats in the Pacific, stressing respect for sovereignties while cooperating on customs security. Topics covered the 2026 EU trade agreement renewal and increased French company presence in Mexico.
