Maurice Pierre Hawley, 35, faces first-degree murder charges in the death of Dalonte Lamont Jackson, 35, who was beaten and run over in a Washington, D.C., alleyway. Authorities say the attack occurred on May 24.
Hawley was arrested in Jackson, North Carolina, and extradited to the District of Columbia. Police responded to reports of an unconscious person in the 3300 block of East Capitol Street around 4:30 p.m. on May 24 and found Jackson clinging to life.
Jackson was taken to a hospital but died five days later from multiple blunt force injuries. Surveillance video captured a gray Mazda stopping at the scene, where one person allegedly dragged the victim from the vehicle and stomped on his head ten times while another watched. The pair then drove over Jackson's legs before leaving.
Investigators linked the vehicle to Hawley after reviewing footage and speaking with witnesses. One account described Jackson sending sexual messages to Hawley on social media before the assault. Hawley has a preliminary hearing scheduled for July 31.
The case is not being investigated as a hate crime, according to local reports.
