Marlins trade Ryan Weathers to Yankees for four prospects

The Miami Marlins traded left-handed pitcher Ryan Weathers to the New York Yankees on Tuesday in exchange for four minor league prospects. This deal marks the second starter the Marlins have moved this month, following the trade of Edward Cabrera to the Chicago Cubs. Marlins president Peter Bendix highlighted the appeal of the prospect package acquired.

The Miami Marlins continued reshaping their roster by trading 26-year-old left-hander Ryan Weathers to the New York Yankees for outfielders Dillon Lewis and Brendan Jones, along with infielders Dylan Jasso and Juan Matheus. Lewis ranks No. 14 and Jones No. 15 on the Marlins' Top 30 Prospects list, while Jasso was the Yankees' No. 23 prospect prior to the deal.

Marlins president of baseball operations Peter Bendix emphasized the value of the return, stating, “We got a package of players that we thought was too good to pass up.” He added, “You’ve got to give something to get something,” expressing confidence in the organization's remaining pitching depth and future rotation, particularly for 2026 and beyond.

This transaction follows the Marlins' deal of right-hander Edward Cabrera to the Cubs earlier in the month; the Yankees had been among the teams discussing Cabrera before that trade. The moves could create opportunities for Miami's top pitching prospects, left-handers Thomas White (the Marlins' No. 1 prospect and No. 22 overall) and Robby Snelling (No. 4 in the system, No. 51 league-wide).

Weathers, a 2018 first-round pick by the San Diego Padres who joined the Marlins in 2023, has a career 4.93 ERA over 281 innings with 235 strikeouts. Injuries limited him to eight starts and 38 innings last season, including a left flexor strain in spring training.

From the Yankees' perspective, Weathers brings a 97 mph fastball—second-fastest among left-handers with 10 or more starts last year—along with a changeup and sweeper generating over 40% whiff rates. Under team control through 2028, he offers versatility as a starter or reliever, though health remains a concern after fewer than 300 career innings.

Bendix praised the prospects: Jones for his 65-grade speed and 69 stolen bases in 148 minor league games; Lewis for 21 home runs last season and athleticism; Matheus as a switch-hitting defender with 40 steals; and Jasso for his .257/.326/.400 slash line at Double-A.
