A Mumbai court has issued an interim injunction against YouTuber CarryMinati, ordering the removal of videos that allegedly defame filmmaker Karan Johar. The case arises from a parody video targeting Johar and Bollywood practices. The court identified vulgar language in the content.
Filmmaker Karan Johar recently filed a suit against YouTube star Ajey Nagar, known as CarryMinati, alleging that his videos defame him. Mumbai civil judge P G Bhosale issued an interim order directing Ajey to remove all content targeting Johar. Defendants in the case include Ajey, his manager Deepak Char, One Hand Clap Media Pvt Ltd, Google, and Meta.
Ajey's lawyer informed the court that the disputed content had already been deleted, but the court granted a temporary injunction nonetheless. The video, titled 'Coffee with Jalan', was a parody of Johar's popular show 'Koffee with Karan'. It featured comments on Johar, Bollywood, and nepotism in the industry. Johar's lawyers from DSK Legal argued that he has built his name and goodwill painstakingly over decades, and Ajey's content seeks to ridicule him.
The court stated that it appears the defendants no. 1 and 2 (Nagar and Char) have made defamatory statements and used vulgar language against the plaintiff. Clips from the video continue to circulate online, causing ongoing damage. CarryMinati is a prominent YouTube creator with 45.3 million subscribers, starting with gaming content before shifting to commentary on contemporary topics. The case highlights tensions between Bollywood and YouTube creators.
