New dinosaur species from patagonia hunted like herons

Paleontologists have identified a new raptor-like dinosaur species that lived about 70 million years ago in southern Patagonia. Named Kank australis, the creature likely hunted fish using adaptations similar to those of modern herons.

The discovery is based on fossils including teeth, vertebrae and toe bones found at La Anita farm near El Calafate in Argentina's Santa Cruz Province. Researchers led by Dr. Matías Motta of the Bernardino Rivadavia Natural Sciences Museum classified it as an unenlagiid theropod and estimated adults reached 2.5 to 3 meters in length.

A crushed dinosaur fossil, long forgotten in a drawer, has been reconstructed by a Virginia Tech undergraduate, unveiling a new species of early carnivorous dinosaur. The specimen, named Ptychotherates bucculentus, belonged to the Herrerasauria group and lived near the end of the Triassic period. Its discovery suggests this ancient dinosaur lineage persisted until the end-Triassic extinction.

Researchers from Australia and New Zealand have discovered fossils from 16 species, including a new ancestor of the kākāpō parrot, in a cave near Waitomo on the North Island. The remains, dating back about one million years, reveal waves of extinction driven by volcanic eruptions and climate shifts long before human arrival. The find fills a major gap in the country's fossil record.

Researchers have named a newly identified juvenile dinosaur species Doolysaurus huhmini, discovered on Aphae Island in South Korea. The fossil, the first from the country to include skull parts, reveals a turkey-sized animal that likely had a fluffy appearance and an omnivorous diet. The findings, led by Jongyun Jung, were published on March 19 in the journal Fossil Record.
