Scientists identify giant new dinosaur species in Thailand

Researchers have identified a massive new species of long-necked dinosaur in Thailand that ranks as the largest ever found in Southeast Asia. The discovery adds to the growing list of prehistoric finds in the region.

The dinosaur, named Nagatitan chaiyaphumensis, measured about 27 meters long and weighed roughly 27 tonnes. Fossils were uncovered near a pond in Chaiyaphum province more than a decade ago and recently analyzed by teams from University College London, Mahasarakham University, Suranaree University of Technology, and Thailand's Sirindhorn Museum. The species lived between 100 and 120 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous period.

A new species of massive marine reptile, Tylosaurus rex, has been described from fossils unearthed in northern Texas. The 43-foot-long mosasaur lived about 80 million years ago and ranks among the largest of its kind. Researchers published the findings on May 21, 2026.

Scientists have determined that Nanotyrannus was a mature, separate species rather than a juvenile Tyrannosaurus rex. A new study analyzed a tiny throat bone from the original fossil, revealing growth patterns indicating adulthood. The findings, published in Science, challenge decades of debate over the dinosaur's identity.

Scientists have identified a new species of ancient animal, Tanyka amnicola, from fossils unearthed in a dry riverbed in Brazil. Dating back 275 million years, this stem tetrapod featured a highly unusual twisted jaw suggesting it ground plant material. The discovery sheds light on early Permian life in Gondwana.
