Taifa Leo published a story on Tuesday claiming Mombasa County Assembly had passed a new law banning spoons, forks and knives in all restaurants on Mombasa Island.
The measure was said to promote Swahili culture by encouraging diners to eat with hands per coastal traditions, with businesses required to provide hand-washing facilities and hygiene guidance. Violators would face fines or license revocation. One councillor was quoted: “Kula kwa mikono ni sehemu muhimu ya utamaduni wetu na ni utambulisho tunaotaka kuuonyesha ulimwengu.” (Eating with hands is an important part of our culture and the identity we want to show the world.)
The newspaper later issued a clarification that the report was an #AprilFoolsDay and #SikukuuYaWajinga joke, with no changes to county policies.
Tourism stakeholders cited in the satirical piece praised it for positioning Mombasa as a cultural hub, though some residents expressed concerns.
