TGI proposes importing Peruvian gas ahead of El Niño

Jorge Henao, general manager of Transportadora de Gas de Colombia (TGI), warned of the need to diversify energy supply sources ahead of the impending El Niño phenomenon. Speaking at the Congreso de Naturgas 2026, he emphasized regional integration with Peru as a key option. Henao highlighted Camisea gas as a cost-effective alternative.

Jorge Henao, TGI's general manager, made these remarks at the Congreso de Naturgas 2026, urging Colombia to prepare for El Niño's impact on the energy sector.

"We must prepare for the El Niño phenomenon and seek different supply sources," Henao stated. He explained that such events strain supply, particularly due to reduced water availability affecting hydroelectric generation.

Henao pointed to Peru as a strategic partner, citing the Camisea field, which has exported gas for over 20 years. "Peruvian gas is the cheapest export gas in the region," he said, noting a price of 6 dollars per million BTU in Melchorita for liquefied gas.

Peruvian gas could reach Colombia not only via pipelines but also through import ports. Henao called for broadening the energy matrix, including storage centers and renewables, to ensure supply for citizens and industries.
