TGI proposes importing Peruvian gas ahead of El Niño

Jorge Henao, general manager of Transportadora de Gas de Colombia (TGI), warned of the need to diversify energy supply sources ahead of the impending El Niño phenomenon. Speaking at the Congreso de Naturgas 2026, he emphasized regional integration with Peru as a key option. Henao highlighted Camisea gas as a cost-effective alternative.

Jorge Henao, TGI's general manager, made these remarks at the Congreso de Naturgas 2026, urging Colombia to prepare for El Niño's impact on the energy sector.

"We must prepare for the El Niño phenomenon and seek different supply sources," Henao stated. He explained that such events strain supply, particularly due to reduced water availability affecting hydroelectric generation.

Henao pointed to Peru as a strategic partner, citing the Camisea field, which has exported gas for over 20 years. "Peruvian gas is the cheapest export gas in the region," he said, noting a price of 6 dollars per million BTU in Melchorita for liquefied gas.

Peruvian gas could reach Colombia not only via pipelines but also through import ports. Henao called for broadening the energy matrix, including storage centers and renewables, to ensure supply for citizens and industries.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) updated its forecasts, estimating a 90% probability of El Niño starting in September 2026 and lasting through the year's final quarter. It raised the May-July projection from 25% in March to 61%. Experts warn of impacts in regions like the Caribbean, Andes, and Orinoquía, including forest fire risks from water deficits and thermal stress.

Colombia's thermal power plants are gearing up to boost liquefied natural gas imports ahead of El Niño's expected arrival in August, which could deplete hydroelectric reservoirs. Alejandro Castañeda, director of Andeg, said the Spec terminal will run at full capacity to support the grid. The move aims to prevent blackouts during the dry season.

Transportadora de Gas Internacional (TGI) and Hocol have signed an agreement to connect the Ballena regasification unit with the offshore Chuchupa field. This development will enable the injection of up to 250 million cubic feet of gas daily into the national system starting January 2027. The deal aims to secure Colombia's natural gas supply and support an orderly energy transition.

Frontera Energy and Ecopetrol have confirmed that the regasification terminal at Puerto Bahía will start operations with 126 million cubic feet per day (Mpcd) of gas by the end of 2026. The project will use existing infrastructure and involves a US$80 million investment from Frontera. The companies urge speeding up environmental and infrastructure permits.

President Gustavo Petro defended Colombia's transition to clean energies, stating that oil exploration contracts from the last decade have not found large amounts of oil. He insisted on lowering the real interest rate to boost the economy. He highlighted advances like investments in solar substations and potential exports.

Frank Pearl, president of the ACP, stressed that Colombia must strengthen its energy security without relying on other countries. This comes amid Venezuela's first gas shipment and a drop in national oil and gas production in 2025.

Colombia's National Environmental Licensing Authority (Anla) has approved Frontera Energy Colombia's VIM-46 oil exploration project in Magangué. The initiative involves drilling up to 55 wells from a maximum of 11 platforms and installing production infrastructure. The approval comes with strict environmental compliance conditions.
