The hydrometeorological disaster striking Sumatra recently has killed hundreds, with Aceh's death toll reaching 326 according to the latest reports. In Banda Aceh on Thursday (4/12/2025), Tgk Malik expressed deep condolences for the loss of lives and infrastructure damage. "We must make this bitter experience a turning point," he said.
He highlighted the need to halt deforestation in upstream areas and river basins, and to implement disaster-risk-based spatial planning. Additionally, Tgk Malik urged control of water pollution from mercury-based illegal mining, strengthening early warning systems with sensors and satellites, and eradicating illegal mining and logging through collaboration between customary institutions, government, and law enforcement.
