Wreck of Havmanden to be examined again

The wreck of the Danish ship Havmanden in Gothenburg's northern archipelago is to be examined anew. Marine archaeologists hope to gain fresh insights into the vessel's construction and recover personal items.

The frigate Havmanden was en route to the island of Saint Thomas in 1683 carrying convicts aboard. Mutineers seized the vessel near the Azores, and the ship later sank in Gothenburg's northern archipelago.

Marine archaeologists plan to study the wreck to gain more knowledge of its construction and to secure it for the future. The work is carried out in collaboration with Bohusläns museum.

"With a protective cover later this year we will slow the decay and preserve this dark but important history so that it does not disappear on the seabed", says museum inspector Andreas Kallmeyer Bloch from the Danish National Museum.

On Friday afternoon, the Swedish Coast Guard, along with the police's special operations unit, boarded a cargo ship off Trelleborg. The vessel Caffa is suspected of being stateless and appears on Ukraine's sanctions list. A preliminary investigation has been initiated for suspected breach of maritime law.

Researchers have uncovered a partial human fingerprint preserved in the caulking of the Hjortspring boat, Scandinavia's oldest plank vessel, suggesting its origins along the Baltic Sea coast. The 2,400-year-old boat, used in an Iron Age raid on Denmark's Als island, was analyzed using modern scientific methods. This finding provides new clues to a century-old mystery about the vessel's builders.

Four days after an explosion and fire struck the HMM Namu near the Strait of Hormuz, the damaged vessel was towed into the Port of Dubai early Friday for further examination.

The Swedish coast guard will equip personnel with heavier weapons and install machine guns on some vessels. Civil defence minister Carl-Oskar Bohlin (M) justifies the decision citing the deteriorating security situation in the Baltic Sea. The government issued the mandate last year, which has now been reported.

Amid the ongoing Strait of Hormuz crisis, Germany's navy has taken concrete steps following earlier planning: the minehunter “Fulda” departed Kiel-Wik for the Mediterranean, and supply ship “Mosel” is being pulled from a NATO Aegean mission to support it. Both will join NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 2, ready for potential strait deployment pending Bundestag approval.
