Young South African golfer seeks sponsorship for Africa challenge

Ten-year-old Luyanda Gumede from KwaZulu-Natal has qualified for the SA Kids Golf Junior Africa Challenge but needs sponsorship to cover costs.

Luyanda Gumede, a Grade 4 learner at Sarina Primary School in Pinetown, earned selection for the tournament at San Lameer Country Club in August. He will compete alongside players from 17 African countries.

His father and coach, Sydney Siphiwe Gumede, retired early from his role as a bus driver at Transnet Durban Transport in May to support his son's career. The family is seeking sponsors to fund equipment, travel and entry fees for events abroad.

Luyanda recently received the Rising Sports Star award at the eThekwini Recognition Sports Awards, which included R15,000. He has already won medals and competed in Zimbabwe and Botswana. His father has registered the Luyanda Gumede Foundation as a non-profit organisation to promote the sport among other children.
