Nearly 68% of the 3.2 km flyover from Saidapet to Teynampet on Anna Salai has been completed. The project faces delays from war, elections and labour issues but aims for a September finish.
The State Highways Department reports slabs placed on girders for 1.1 km. Foundation work for pillars stands at 98% and 32 of 131 decks are in place. Eight more decks are targeted by the end of May.
The flyover crosses Metrorail tunnels, a unique aspect of the project. Thirteen of the 32 decks over the tunnels have been launched. The approach ramp on the Saidapet side and crash barriers are finished.
Delays stemmed from high fuel prices, war effects and labour shortages during elections. Workers have returned and officials expect completion on schedule in September.
At Teynampet and Nandanam stations, reinforcement bars along diaphragm walls have been tested. Twelve of 42 pedestals are ready. Local resident C. Sarathy called for temporary shelters at bus stops and measures to prevent water falling from the site.
