Filipina tennis player Alex Eala lost to Italy's Jasmine Paolini in the Wimbledon round of 16 on Monday, ending her historic run but earning widespread admiration.
Alex Eala lost to 13th seed Jasmine Paolini 4-6, 6-4, 3-6 on Centre Court at the All England Club. The 21-year-old had reached the fourth round after defeating defending champion Iga Swiatek in the previous match.
Eala received a standing ovation from the crowd despite the defeat. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. posted on social media praising her achievement and stating that the world has only begun to see what Filipinos are capable of.
Paolini, the 2024 runner-up, advanced to face Marta Kostyuk in the quarterfinals. Eala became the first Filipina to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam singles tournament since 1953.
