Amazon has removed its AI-generated video recaps from Prime Video following viewer complaints about factual inaccuracies in the Fallout summary. The feature, launched in a limited beta last month, aimed to help users catch up on shows but included errors like misdating flashbacks and plot misinterpretations. The recaps are no longer available on tested titles including Fallout, Bosch, Upload, The Rig, and Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan.
In November, Amazon introduced a limited beta of Video Recaps, an AI-powered feature designed to summarize key plot points and character arcs for select Prime Video original shows. The tool combined video clips, audio effects, dialog snippets, music, and an AI-generated voiceover narration to create engaging season previews, helping viewers prepare for new episodes.
However, the feature quickly faced backlash after users identified errors in the recap for the first season of Fallout. One viewer on the r/Fallout subreddit noted that the AI incorrectly placed Cooper Howard's flashbacks in 1950, when they are actually set in 2077. Another post on X highlighted a misphrased description of the finale: "'Cooper offers Lucy a choice in the finale: die, or join him' phrased as if he'd be the one to kill her."
Reports indicate the recap option has vanished from the app and web interface for affected shows. On the Fallout season two page, no video recap is available, and similar removals apply to other tested titles like Bosch, Upload, The Rig, and Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan. For some users, such as CNET Senior Editor Corinne Reichert, the recap button still appears but does nothing when clicked.
This pullback echoes previous AI missteps by Amazon, including the removal of AI-generated English dubs for anime shows after user complaints. The company has not yet responded to requests for comment on the recaps' status or future plans. Video Recaps were accessible via the "Extras" section on the web or a dedicated button on show pages, but their abrupt pause underscores challenges in deploying generative AI for entertainment content.
