Security Minister Martín Arrau spoke out after it was revealed that the man detained for driving at 264 km/h on the Costanera Norte is his wife's cousin.
On Sunday afternoon a 38-year-old man was detained in the commune of Vitacura after driving at 264 kilometers per hour on the Costanera Norte highway, where the limit is 100 km/h. Fast Check revealed that the driver is the cousin of Luz María Izquierdo Irarrázaval, wife of Minister Arrau.
Through his social media, Arrau stated: “Like all Chileans, I categorically condemn the indolent, reckless and harmful conduct of the accused, with whom I have no friendship or closeness”. He added that “conduct like that of this subject must be sanctioned with the full rigor of the law”.
Judge Ximena Rivera of the Fourth Guarantee Court of Santiago rejected the house arrest requested by the Prosecutor's Office. The accused was released with monthly signature and national arraigo, despite prior records for drunk driving. The magistrate kept his driver's license valid and prohibited the dissemination of his identity.
