Arthur Fils withdraws injured from Rome event two weeks before Roland-Garros

Top French player Arthur Fils withdrew on Saturday against Andrea Pellegrino at the Rome Masters 1000 after feeling hip pain.

Fils, 21 and ranked 17th, retired after 22 minutes in the second round while trailing 4-0. He felt hip pain in the second game and received treatment but could not continue.

The Frenchman explained his choice: "I felt a pain in my hip in the second game. Unfortunately I had to stop shortly after. There was no point taking risks before Roland."

After an eight-month back injury layoff from August 2025 to February 2026, Fils had returned strongly with a Barcelona title and semifinals in Miami and Madrid. Roland-Garros begins on May 24.
