Students, teachers and staff of Ateneo de Manila University held a solidarity walkout on June 19 calling for transparency, accountability and justice in the deaths of student-athletes Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili.
The walkout was led by the Sanggunian ng mga Mag-aaral ng mga Paaralang Loyola ng Ateneo de Manila. Participants called on the university to uphold its Ignatian values and take clear action.
At the Zen Garden, the crowd held a program with candles and prayers. Graduating seniors also wore black armbands during commencement exercises to remember the two students.
Former Sanggunian president Annika Torres said it was time for renewal at Ateneo. The community also called for a thorough investigation and support for the victims' families.
Ateneo president Fr. Roberto Yap announced on June 19 the creation of a Response and Reform Committee that will submit recommendations by July 19.
