Ateneo coordinated an autopsy for Rene Baterbonia after his parents' request while assisting with the return of Divine Adili's remains to Nigeria. The two Ateneo basketball players drowned on June 8 during a team building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.
The 19-year-old Baterbonia and 21-year-old Adili died from drowning after being swept away by strong currents during a sea activity at a private resort. Their remains were transferred on June 9 from Aurora Memorial Hospital to Arlington Memorial Chapels and Crematory in Quezon City. Ateneo president Fr. Roberto Yap met Baterbonia's parents and brother, who arrived from Davao City, and blessed the remains. The university coordinated with the National Bureau of Investigation and the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group for the requested autopsy. Adili's family requested the return of his body to Nigeria in line with their practices. Ateneo is awaiting written authorization to process the documentation. No final arrangements for the wakes have been confirmed. Aurora police described the deaths as a natural accident with no indication of foul play. Baterbonia's mother Rovelyn questioned the decision to conduct sea training for basketball players and called for a thorough investigation.
