Belo Horizonte teachers vote to extend strike after assembly

Municipal education workers in Belo Horizonte voted to continue their strike, which has now lasted more than 15 days. The decision came during an assembly attended by around 1,200 people on Thursday afternoon.

The assembly took place at Praça Afonso Arinos in the city center. According to Sind-Rede/BH, city proposals have advanced little toward meeting demands raised months ago.

Municipal officials stated they addressed six of the eight priority items discussed at Tuesday’s meeting. The union disputed this account, saying the city had not fulfilled most of the claims.

With the strike continuing, workers plan to step up actions through leafleting, community meetings and pressure on councilors to open a parliamentary inquiry into education.

Centrist leaders in Brazil's lower house want to avoid voting on a bill regulating extra perks and supersalaries for public servants unless President Lula's government engages directly. The Supreme Federal Court suspended these benefits and ordered Congress to legislate within 60 days, but the deadline is deemed too short in an election year. The STF plenary is judging the decisions this week.
