Brazilian medical student Julia Victoria Sobierai Cardoso, 23, was found dead in her apartment in Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, on Friday (24). Ex-boyfriend Vitor Rangel Aguiar, 27, is the main suspect and remains at large. The crime, probed as femicide, involved 67 stab wounds.
Julia Victoria Sobierai Cardoso, from Chapecó (SC) and raised in Navegantes, was studying medicine at Universidad de la Integración de las Américas (Unida) since 2025. The young woman, who dreamed of becoming a pediatrician, was found by a roommate in the Obreiro neighborhood with multiple stab wounds.
The forensic report revealed 67 wounds: 60 from a cuticle scissors and seven from a knife. Blood trails, barefoot footprints, and signs of a struggle were present. Prosecutor Osvaldo Zaracho stated that teams collected evidence, including fingerprints, and seized the weapons for analysis.
Vitor Rangel Aguiar, also a medical student from Maranhão, is the suspect after arguing with the victim hours before the crime. He continued visiting the apartment post-breakup. Paraguay's National Police and Public Ministry issued a national arrest warrant for femicide and are preparing an international capture request.
Unida issued a statement mourning her death and offering solidarity to the family. Witnesses, including the roommate and her boyfriend, gave statements. The body was taken for autopsy in Asunción.
