Bruce Tull, the guitarist and pedal steel player for the alt-country band Scud Mountain Boys, has died at the age of 71.
Tull died on June 22 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, after a brief illness. Joe Pernice, the band's frontman, posted a tribute on Instagram, stating that he and the other members were "hollowed by his passing" and sending love to Tull's family.
Born in Midwest City, Oklahoma, Tull joined the band in 1991 while studying economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The group, originally called the Scuds, shifted from alt-rock to acoustic country sounds and released albums including Pine Box and Dance the Night Away in 1995, followed by Massachusetts on Sub Pop in 1996.
After disbanding, the Scud Mountain Boys reunited for the 2013 album Do You Love the Sun. Tull remained active in the Western Massachusetts music scene, producing and playing on numerous local records.
