The Chicago Cubs acquired right-hander Aaron Civale from the Athletics on Saturday in exchange for minor league pitcher Aiden Moffett and cash considerations.
Cubs manager Craig Counsell said on Sunday that Civale would join the team within the next few days. The eight-year veteran had previously pitched for Chicago last season, posting a 2.08 ERA in 13 innings during the regular season and throwing scoreless innings in the playoffs.
Civale signed a one-year, $6 million deal with the A's before this season but posted a 5.42 ERA over 74 2/3 innings. He was designated for assignment by Oakland on Wednesday. Counsell noted that Civale can provide multi-inning relief or start as the Cubs face a stretch of 17 games in a row.
Chicago is also awaiting the return of injured starters Jameson Taillon, who is set to be activated off the injured list on Monday against the Tigers, and Edward Cabrera, who is expected back in mid-August. The Aug. 3 trade deadline falls during this busy period.
