The Directorate of Criminal Investigations confirmed on Friday that it had arrested comedian and activist Erick Omondi at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in connection with recent fuel protests.
DCI officers from Central and the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau Nairobi Region took Omondi into custody following credible intelligence. He is being held at the Nairobi Region DCI Headquarters while recording a statement and awaiting arraignment. Earlier on Friday, Omondi posted on social media that eight non-uniformed men had arrested him. The DCI statement clarified the circumstances and linked the arrest to offences committed during demonstrations against higher fuel prices. The agency noted that several other suspects in the same case were arraigned on May 18, 2026. It also reminded Kenyans of their right to peaceful assembly while warning that criminal acts during protests would be prosecuted.
