Novak Djokovic delivered an upbeat assessment of Serena Williams' return to tennis, calling her efforts a gift to the sport. The 24-time Grand Slam champion spoke on CBS Mornings about the 44-year-old's recent comeback after two years away.
Djokovic said Williams' decision to compete again after having two children and a long break is inspiring regardless of results. “Whatever happens, it doesn’t matter if she wins or loses; it’s already epic,” he stated.
He added that he had told her personally during Wimbledon how he feels. “What she’s doing now after having 2 kids and being away for so long is a gift for us, for anyone who loves tennis,” Djokovic said.
Williams returned last month at the HSBC Championships, where she won one doubles match. She later lost in the first round of singles at Wimbledon before withdrawing from doubles with a knee injury.
Djokovic had previously defended Williams against criticism of her comeback, urging fans to appreciate her presence on court.
