EACC arrests three Nairobi water officials over fake academic certificates

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has arrested three officials accused of using forged academic certificates to earn a combined Ksh17.9 million in salaries. Two worked for the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company while the third was employed at Kaimosi Friends University.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission arrested two Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company officials on May 11, 2026. They appeared the next day at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court where they denied charges of forgery, uttering false documents and fraudulent acquisition of public property. Each was released on Ksh300,000 cash bail or a Ksh1 million bond with surety.

A third suspect was arrested on May 12 at his home in Cheptulu, Vihiga County. He allegedly used a forged diploma from Kenya College of Commerce and a fake Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Zetech University to obtain employment at Kaimosi Friends University.

The three officials together received Ksh17,905,887.06 in salaries. One Nairobi official earned Ksh5,909,037.10 while the other received Ksh9,485,177.96. The Vihiga suspect collected Ksh2,511,672.

The arrests form part of an ongoing EACC campaign that has flagged more than 549 public servants for holding fraudulent documents since mid-2025.
