Italian authorities have detained four suspects in connection with an October car bomb attack targeting investigative journalist Sigfrido Ranucci near Rome. The arrests took place on Tuesday in the Naples area.
The blast destroyed two vehicles outside Ranucci's home in Pomezia, a residential area about 12 miles south of Rome. Ranucci, who hosts the RAI 3 program Report, had just arrived home when the explosion occurred, while his daughter had passed the site roughly 30 minutes earlier.
Police said the four men, arrested near Naples, are suspected of possessing and using explosives in public, making threats and causing damage, with aggravating factors including group action and mafia-style methods. Three were placed in pre-trial detention and one under house arrest.
Ranucci has been under police protection since 2021 due to his reporting on corruption and organized crime. He told the ANSA news agency he had received an endless list of threats. The anti-mafia prosecutor's office in Rome is continuing the investigation to identify those who ordered the attack.
