The Kenya National Examinations Council will begin digital assessments in senior schools in 2027. The shift follows successful e-assessment trials in teacher training colleges. Officials aim to boost efficiency and support learners with new tools.
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) announced plans to move senior school exams online starting in 2027. Chief Executive Officer David Njengere said the change builds on three years of digital testing for over 37,000 teacher trainees.
The system is expected to cut costs, speed up result processing and give real-time data on student performance. It will also allow remote marking and adaptive formats for learners with special needs.
KNEC will first test the approach in senior schools before wider rollout. Officials noted challenges including weak infrastructure and typing skills, and said they will use lockdown browsers to protect exam integrity.
The digital push aligns with the ICT in Education and Training Policy of 2021 and the National Education Sector Strategic Plan of 2023. Growth from a 2021 pilot of 45 candidates to more than 50,000 by 2025 shows steady progress.
