A Nevada-based energy company plans to stop supplying electricity to about 49,000 residents near Lake Tahoe by May 2027. The move leaves the local California provider scrambling for a replacement amid rising demand from data centers.
Liberty Utilities, which serves the California side of Lake Tahoe, currently gets 75 percent of its power from NV Energy. The Nevada utility has informed Liberty that it will end the agreement by May 2027 to free up capacity for new data center projects in northern Nevada.
