The San Diego Padres defeated the Colorado Rockies 3-1 on Wednesday afternoon to extend their winning streak to five games. The victory comes days before the MLB Trade Deadline on Monday.
The Padres improved to within 1 1/2 games of the final National League Wild Card spots with the win at Petco Park. Mason Miller recorded his 28th save while Jeremiah Estrada, activated from the injured list before the game after nearly two months with right knee inflammation, struck out three straight batters in relief.
Kyle Hart and Griffin Canning combined for 5 2/3 scoreless innings. Hart allowed no runs over 2 2/3 innings and Canning followed with nine outs. Manager Craig Stammen stuck to a planned bullpen approach despite the strong outings.
"How we’re playing right now, I think, is the true identity of this club," said Jake Cronenworth. Estrada’s return gives the Padres added depth in the bullpen alongside Miller and Adrian Morejon ahead of the deadline.
To make room for Estrada, the Padres designated right-hander Matt Waldron for assignment. Waldron posted a 7.16 ERA in 10 appearances this season.
