Twin Trakehner foals have been born on a horse farm in Hirschburg near Ribnitz-Damgarten. Both foals and the mother mare are doing well.
Tino Leipold, owner of the Bernsteinreiter-Hof, has bred Trakehner horses for 20 years. He had never experienced a twin birth in that time and said he had not expected it.
The foals named Primus Maximus and Primus Minimus were born on April 10. The mother mare Prima Diva managed the birth without a caesarean, although twin births in horses are extremely rare and the survival chance is below one percent.
Farm vet Hannah Jeibmann explained that nature is not designed for two foals in the womb. Leipold was surprised by the media response triggered by a video of the foals on Facebook, which has led to rising follower numbers.
