A 20-year-old leisure centre worker has been charged and placed in provisional detention for the rape of a 4-year-old girl during after-school activities in Divonne-les-Bains in the Ain department.
The public prosecutor's office in Bourg-en-Bresse confirmed on Tuesday that the suspect, who has no prior criminal record, has been charged with rape of a minor by a person in a position of authority over the victim. The girl, enrolled in after-school care, was examined by a doctor after her parents noticed suspicious marks on her body.
The man was arrested on 18 June by gendarmes at the leisure centre in Divonne-les-Bains where he worked. Reports indicate he was handcuffed on site in broad daylight in front of witnesses. The rape is said to have occurred the previous day.
The centre hosts children from maternal and elementary schools in this town of 10,000 residents located by Lake Geneva. The prosecutor's office provided no further details on the case.
