513 uncontested candidates elected ahead of June 3 local elections

South Korea's National Election Commission said Saturday that 513 candidates were elected without a vote ahead of the June 3 local elections.

The National Election Commission announced that 513 candidates, including three local government heads, won their races unopposed. The three are Kim I-gang of Gwangju's Seo ward, Kim Byung-nae of Gwangju's Nam ward and Lim Byeong-taek, mayor of Siheung.

All three belong to the ruling Democratic Party. Gwangju is viewed as a party stronghold, while the main opposition failed to nominate anyone in Siheung.

As a result, 307 districts will not hold votes. Another 510 elected candidates are local council members. Overall, 7,829 people registered for races that include 16 metropolitan mayors and governors plus 14 National Assembly seats.

Candidate registration opened Thursday for South Korea's June 3 local elections and parliamentary by-elections, seen as a key test of public sentiment toward President Lee Jae Myung's first year in office.

Ruling and opposition parties are preparing for the June 3 local elections, viewed as a gauge of public sentiment on political polarization following former President Yoon Suk Yeol's failed martial law bid. The elections include parliamentary by-elections in over 10 constituencies and mark the first major test for President Lee Jae Myung's administration since June last year. The Democratic Party aims to bolster its mandate, while the People Power Party focuses on economic issues to rebound.
