Ben Shelton claimed his first grass-court title at the Stuttgart Open on June 14. He defeated defending champion Taylor Fritz 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in the final.
The 22-year-old American secured his sixth ATP Tour title overall during the Boss Open final in Germany. Shelton overpowered Fritz in a match that saw both players trade sets before the decisive third set.
During the trophy ceremony, Shelton praised Fritz's record on grass but miscounted his titles. Fritz corrected him from six to five, prompting Shelton to reply, "Still ridiculous," which drew laughter from the crowd.
Fritz has now reached six grass-court finals in his career and won five of them. Shelton also commended his compatriot's recovery from a knee injury earlier in the season.
Both players next compete at the ATP 500 event in Halle, with Shelton facing Nick Kyrgios and Fritz taking on Zizou Bergs.
