U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to visit South Korea next week for talks with senior officials in Seoul. He will then head to China to prepare for a summit between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
According to diplomatic sources, Bessent is likely to arrive in South Korea on Wednesday for a single-day visit. He is expected to meet Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol and other senior officials to discuss the foreign exchange market and a range of economic and financial issues.
The Korea trip follows a scheduled three-day visit to Japan starting Monday. There, Bessent is set to meet Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda.
The schedule comes ahead of the Trump-Xi summit planned for Thursday and Friday. Sources said the stop in Seoul aims to address mutual economic concerns before the leaders' meetings in China.
