Comelec begins early preparations for 2028 elections

To ensure the success of the 2028 elections, the Commission on Elections plans to start preparations early. Spokesman John Rex Laudiangco said they will use the timeline adopted for the 2025 elections as a guide. The plan includes studying new technologies to clean up the voters' list.

In a televised public briefing on Friday, Comelec spokesman John Rex Laudiangco shared that preparations began immediately after the May 2022 elections, three years ahead of the 2025 polls. "Right after the May 2022 elections, the Comelec immediately started preparing what will be needed in the next elections. So, three years before the 2025 elections, we already started," he said.

He added, "That is the Comelec’s plan for the 2028 elections. So next year, we will start early, just like in 2022." Part of the strategy involves hosting a vendor’s fair to invite technology providers from around the world. "We will take a look at new technologies being promoted worldwide that can be used in the elections," he explained.

At the same time, the Comelec is exploring upgrades to the registration process, including facial recognition and iris scanning. They plan to shift from four-finger fingerprints to all ten fingers. These steps aim to purify the voters' list and prevent flying voters or those voting in place of the deceased.

"We will make sure that the list we will release come 2028 is accurate, clean and pictures of every voter are attached so there will be no room for the cheaters and impostors come election time," Laudiangco stated. This approach seeks to guarantee a fair and orderly election in 2028.
