The Chicago Cubs beat the Colorado Rockies 9-3 on Thursday afternoon at Coors Field to avoid a sweep. Seiya Suzuki hit a fourth-inning grand slam, while Cole Carrigg homered in his third Major League game.
The Cubs scored early and often after a quiet start. Suzuki’s slam off Ryan Feltner gave Chicago a 4-1 lead. Alex Bregman and Carson Kelly added later home runs.
Cole Carrigg, called up from Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday, hit a 418-foot solo homer in the fourth. He also tripled for his first MLB hit and added an infield single.
Cubs manager Craig Counsell was ejected in the sixth after arguing a double play call. The play began when a ball struck Moisés Ballesteros and rolled into the infield.
Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer praised Carrigg’s approach. Carrigg said he is focused on staying ready whenever the team needs him.
