Cubs place Matt Shaw and Ethan Roberts on injured list

The Chicago Cubs have placed infielder Matt Shaw and pitcher Ethan Roberts on the injured list ahead of their series against the San Diego Padres.

Matt Shaw went on the 10-day injured list with a left hand sprain after fouling off a pitch during Sunday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers. The soreness persisted into Monday, leading manager Craig Counsell to make the move before the series opener.

Counsell said the team is optimistic after ruling out longer-term issues. He noted swelling in Shaw's hand and wrist but indicated a possible return to swinging by the weekend if inflammation decreases. Shaw would be eligible to return July 9 in Baltimore.

The Cubs recalled outfielder Kevin Alcántara from Triple-A Iowa to bolster the bench. Michael Conforto is expected to see increased playing time in right field.

Right-hander Ethan Roberts was also placed on the 15-day injured list with right forearm inflammation. Roberts posted a 4.21 ERA in 23 games this season but had struggled with an 8.38 ERA in June.
