Egypt adopts US vehicle safety standards to boost trade

The Egyptian government has formally accepted US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, opening the market to American automobiles and parts. US Assistant Secretary of Commerce Steven Haines announced the milestone during a visit to a General Motors plant in 6th of October City on July 25.

US Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Analysis Steven Haines made the announcement alongside US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Robert Silverman, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Mohamed Farid, Minister of Industry Khaled Hashem, and General Motors Egypt General Manager Rohan Fernandes.

Haines stated, “I am pleased that Egypt has opened a clear pathway to significantly increase US vehicle and parts exports to Egypt, building on the more than $256m in US automotive goods exported to Egypt last year.” He added that the changes would give Egyptian consumers greater access to safe American vehicles and help unlock economic opportunity.

Rohan Fernandes noted that the decision provides greater certainty for automakers and has already enabled Cadillac’s return in May. The adoption is expected to streamline imports, enhance competitiveness, and support exporters including General Motors.
