Train enthusiasts took a historic journey between George and the Great Brak River on Sunday, marking the first use of the line since 2010.
Around 2300 passengers joined the trip through scenic areas in the Western Cape. The service was run as a collaboration between Atlantic Rail, the Ceres Rail Company and Transnet.
Erasmus Smith, who travelled from Gqeberha, described the early start. “We woke up at 03:00 this morning and we hit the road at 04:00 and arrived here at 7.45,” he said. He added that he came for the children to experience something he enjoyed when younger.
Train tourism has seen renewed interest along the Garden Route and in other parts of the Western Cape, with several routes already operating from Mossel Bay.
