A farmer in Campezo captured an Iberian lynx on camera traps in December. The association Hontza Natura Elkartea released the images of the animal, which wore a radio transmitter collar.
A farmer in the Álava town of Campezo set up camera traps to record wild animals on his land. The images show a specimen of Lynx pardinus, distinct from the boreal lynx.
The animal came from the south of the Iberian Peninsula and evidence suggests it was a reintroduced individual. Lynxes can cover more than 25 kilometers in a single day.
The last lynx sightings in Álava date from the early 20th century in the Aitzkorri-Aratz range, the Gorbea massif and Valdegovía. There are no reintroduction projects in Euskadi, although programs in Aragón aid expansion through the Ebro Valley.
The Iberian lynx diet depends almost 90 percent on rabbits. The species populations are recovering thanks to captive breeding and reintroduction programs.
