The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has unveiled designs for a new Nithi Bridge, estimated to cost Sh7 billion. The bridge will form part of the 84 km dual carriageway Kenol-Marua highway. Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has assured timely completion of the project.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has released designs for a new Nithi Bridge, described as one of the most aesthetically pleasing and costly bridges in the country once completed. The bridge's budget is estimated at Sh7 billion and will span half of the 84 km dual carriageway Kenol-Marua highway. The project's original cost was estimated at Sh14.6 billion, but due to delays and procurement challenges, it has risen to Sh17 billion.
The largest bridge in Kenya is the Mteza Creek bridge, measuring 1.44 km, built as part of the Sh27 billion Dongo Kundu Phase II highway linking Mombasa to the southern coast. That equates to Sh2.66 billion per kilometre, suggesting the Nithi Bridge could cost around Sh4 billion. However, considering the numerous accidents and lives lost on the current bridge, along with the distress caused to residents in the Mount Kenya East region, government agencies believe Sh7 billion is not excessive.
Addressing Meru residents recently, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki stated the government is committed to completing the project on schedule. “We now have the funds and the public has already been consulted for their input. Soon, I will bring the contractor to start construction,” the Deputy President said in Tigania Mashariki on February 25, 2026.
The project is expected to address transport and safety challenges in the area.
