Live-action Moana opens to modest $40M-$45M U.S. weekend

Disney's live-action remake of Moana is tracking toward a $40 million to $45 million domestic opening this weekend after earning $4.5 million in Thursday previews.

The film, directed by Thomas Kail, stars Catherine Laga’aia in the title role alongside Dwayne Johnson reprising his part as Maui. It follows the animated original's story of Moana's journey to restore the heart of Te Fiti.

Produced at a cost of $250 million, the movie is expected to fall short of earlier forecasts of more than $60 million. Critics have given it a 35 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Other cast members include Rena Owen as Gramma Tala, John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Sina and Jemaine Clement returning as Tamatoa. The production also features returning animal characters Pua and Heihei.
