The DC Studios film Supergirl grossed approximately $38 million domestically and $68 million worldwide in its opening weekend. Industry estimates project a loss of around $125 million for the movie.
Directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Milly Alcock, the film adapted from the graphic novel Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow faced challenges from the start. Testing showed only a good but not great response, and social media chatter was mixed to negative, with some viewers comparing it unfavorably to Guardians of the Galaxy.
The movie carried a reported net production cost of $170 million to $186 million plus $120 million in global marketing expenses. Warner Bros. sources indicated a breakeven point near $315 million globally.
Audience exits gave the film a 52 percent definite recommend score. It drew just 15 percent of its audience from women under 25. Critics assigned it a 54 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
In the same frame, Toy Story 5 earned $70 million in its second weekend. DC Studios co-chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran have expressed continued confidence in their broader strategy despite the results.
